lore (semi sorted)
• main drive is wanting to understand the world and people around him, not really caring for ethics or politics being in the way
• came from a small rural village (haven't really decided on where exactly yet) where he was allowed to stay with his family for longer than usual, because he insisted on joining the town guard because he wanted to protect his beloved family and home (he was also quite aimless and didn't know what to do as an adolescent tbf)
• joined the Lancer's guild in Gridania later, after his mother sent him there to work on his combat skills (and to send him on his way)
• excelled as a lancer (good for him) and looked for a mentor or guild to take him in to get even better --> landed under the wing of a retired dragoon in Coerthas who moved from Ishgard to the desolate landscape to get away from people
• his mentor attempted to kill him twice because he wasn't convinced of his worth, especially with not being from the area and being Viera, he refused to train him properly and instead forced him to fight for survival
• Orion did not take that well (big surprise), moved into Ishgard slums after his mentor abandoned him because he had nowhere to go, he didn't want to go back home as a disappointment; went back to his mentor after working as a mercenary for ~10 years in Ishgard and killed him without even exchanging a word. He smashed the body so brutally that he became unrecognizable and kept a shard of his cheekbone that broke off during his assault
• he has a large nasty scar next to his lower spine from the first time his mentor tried killing him, almost paralyzing him with the blade being close to completely impaling him, but just barely missing most vital parts (though he does have some nerve damage that took away some feeling from his limbs)
• his sens of self worth and recognizing his skill was largely shattered (and still is in a way)
• keeps to himself a lot, but grew up as a very empathetic child who cried even when he wasn't subjected to tragedy himself, now he still cries a lot, but keeps it within the confined walls of his inn room
• his frustration, melancholy and overall sadness are 90% channeled into anger now and he often looks for challenging fights to blow off steam and enjoy the adrenaline of risking his life
• gets homesick a lot when he has too much time to ponder, so he either looks for any kind of task or a sparring partner
• can not take being called a disappointment to his face, he'll lash out and might attempt killing the perpetrator
• very curious about exploring the edge of life and death since killing his mentor, deep down yearning to see someone on the edge of death by his hand and feeling someone's blood spill by his blade
• ate his mentor's heart, convincing himself that he could hold onto his hatred for him like this
• eventually properly trained by Estinien during Heavensward
BackgroundOrion is from a merchant village with a heavy focus on agriculture! as a child and up to his teens, he loved to explore the vast wheat fields and watching the blades of grass gently sway under the midday sun. He also caught bugs, lizards and other small animals there like any curious child did. he cried bitterly when his family got around to slaughtering livestock for the loss of a friend. Though he was quickly taught that by consuming their flesh, they are honoring and commemorating their lives.
This had a huge impact on his later outlook on life - even if it tugged at his heartstrings, he overcame his fears and the boundaries of his gentle nature by acknowledging that to survive, someone or something would always end up getting the shorter end of the stick. He had always worn his heart on his sleeve, feeling joy for strangers reuniting and cry for those overcome with sadness.
Because he was so utterly set on protecting his home and village - people he felt immense love for - he had taken up on being a townsguard early. He had no training but utter determination that lead him to seek out more experienced individuals in his village to teach him how to wield and use a weapon. He soon turned out to be incredibly vigilant and dexterous, qualities which made him an excellent sentinel for his home. but he had already long overstayed his welcome as a young viera man, staying many years longer than what tradition allowed. Thus, his mother sent him to gridania's lancer guild with a heavy heart.
